Prior to the Austria/Switzerland-hosted tournament, players who led the competition for most goals shared the Golden Boot title, while the past four tournaments have taken a different route should there be equal leaders.
In the case of a tie, a tie-breaker will see the player with the most assists for the tournament claim the Golden Boot. If a further tie-breaker is required, the player who played fewer minutes will win the award.
This change has seen the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (2012), Mario Balotelli (2012), Mario Gomez (2012), Mario Mandžukić (2012), Alan Dzagoev (2012) and Patrick Schick (2020) miss out on the Golden Boot despite kicking the most goals at respective tournaments.
The opening edition of the Euros in 1960 had five players share the award, the most for a single tournament.
24 winners of the Golden Boot Award won the award in the 12 tournaments prior to the change for the 2008 competition.
Spain's Fernando Torres (2012) and Ronaldo (2020) have each won the award following tie-breakers.
