Sam Whiteman has confirmed he will remain with the Sydney Thunder for the 2022-23 Big Bash League season.

The club confirmed his re-commitment to the franchise on Tuesday morning having made the switch to the Thunder ahead of last summer.

Prior to that, Whiteman had spent seven seasons with the Perth Scorchers, where he was involved in three premiership campaigns.

Also a wicket-keeper, the hard-hitting left-hander has played 45 T20 games, scoring 653 runs, and has been in wonderful Sheffield Shield form this summer, scoring 193 against South Australia a month ago.

Regularly talked about as one of the future options to open Australia's Test match batting alongside Caleb Jewell, Tim Ward and Henry Hunt, Whiteman's form has carried for the best part of 18 months.

The 30-year-old said this season is a big opportunity for the men in lime green.

โ€œSydney Thunder has an exciting group of players,โ€ Whiteman said in a club statement.

โ€œI see this season as a wonderful opportunity for myself and the group. There is a nice balance here between the young players and the squad's experienced heads. I see similarities to my time with Perth.

โ€œI enjoyed having โ€˜Trev' as our coach. While he provides his players with clear messaging, he allows them to play their own game. He prepares the players well, but on game day it is up to the 11 guys playing [to do their thing]. As a player I find that rewarding.

โ€œMy aim for BBL|12 is quite simple: I've played a fair bit of cricket and I'm experienced. I want to add depth to the squad and to hopefully fit in as I did last year.โ€

Whiteman and the Thunder open the BBL season in Canberra next Tuesday evening against the Melbourne Stars.
