Australia have just seven Tests left as they attempt to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship for the first time.

Pat Cummins' side have just thumped the West Indies 2-0 in a series which has taken plenty of pressure off, but they will still need to find results in their final two series, at home against South Africa for three Tests and away to India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy across four Tests.

As it stands, Australia lead the World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle with 75 per cent of the total points achievable. Across their four series, Australia have won 8 of their 12 Tests, with another three draws.

No penalties thanks to slow over rates also helps the Australian charge during their four series, but the two series are arguably the toughest they will face.

Behind them, South Africa sit on 60 per cent, Sri Lanka 53.33 per cent, India 52.08 and all other teams are under 50 per cent, with Pakistan falling away down the table after losing their first two Tests to England during an ongoing home series.

As it stands, Australia are in a great position, but have lost to South Africa in each of their last three series at home, and have routinely struggled on the sub-continent.

That said, Australia will likely only need to win two of their remaining seven Tests to qualify - although that won't mathematically secure their position in the final at Lord's next June. Only wins against both South Africa and India would achieve that.

Seven losses from seven (as unlikely as that may seem) in their remaining Tests would see Australia drop to below 50 per cent and bundled out, with South Africa and India then the likely two teams to play the final.

Should Sri Lanka win 2-0 against New Zealand away from home, then they also come into calculations for a spot in the final, and would likely push Australia into needing more than two wins, although it would again depend on how many matches Australia are able to draw out of the remaining five against South Africa and India.

Only Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India are still in realistic positions to qualify, although Pakistan could still fight their way in with a win over England in the third Test and two wins at home against New Zealand over the Christmas and New Year period in what will be their final series.

Australia will kick off their final two Test series of the WTC 2021-23 cycle against South Africa in Brisbane on Saturday.
