A green-looking pitch has been revealed at the Gabba just 24 hours before the first ball in Australia's three-Test series against South Africa.

The Gabba - traditionally a venue which will provide plenty to quick bowlers on Day 1 - has played differently in recent years, much more on the lower and slower side.

While the pitch as it stands will likely be mowed and rolled again ahead of the first ball on Saturday morning against the Proteas, both bowling attacks, who could hold an argument to be the best in the world, will be licking their lips.

The changing conditions in the last few years haven't slowed down the hosts, with Australia winning a staggering 41 of 64 Tests at the venue dating back to 1931, only losing on nine occasions.

That run has continued in recent years, with Australia winning eight of the last nine Tests played at the venue. Their only loss at the Gabba in the red ball format came against India in 2021, with only draws then being present on the list of results outside of Australian victories since the West Indies recorded a win against the Aussies in 1988.

That said, the Proteas come into this series having won the last three on the hop in Australia, something Pat Cummins' side will be desperate to reverse.

Cummins has been confirmed to come back into the Australian side for the first Test against South Africa after missing the second against the West Indies, with Michael Neser the man to make way.

Play will commence at 11:20am (AEDT) - 10:20am (local) on Saturday morning in Brisbane.
