Australian batting coach Michael Di Venuto has jumped to the defence of his line-up after their dramatic collapse during the second Test against India in Delhi.

The Test, which put India ahead in the series 2-0, a now unassailable lead to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy, also leaves Australia with only two chances to avoid a whitewash and confirm their position in the World Test Championship final, which will be held during June in England ahead of the Ashes.

Australia took a one-run lead out of the first innings, although it should have been more, only impacted by a staggering 114-run stand for the eighth wicket by Axar Patel (74) and Ravichandran Ashwin (37).

India barely played a sweep shot during their innings, but Australia came out batting with brooms, and after being 1 for 65, they would collapse to be all out for 113.

At one point, Australia lost Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Pat Cummins without the score changing as they collapsed.

Despite the disappointing scoreboard, batting coach Michael Di Venuto found no fault with the batting line-up's plans, but said it was going away from plans that caused the issues.

"Plans certainly weren't wrong," Di Venuto said today in Delhi.

"Our plans are good, but if people go away from their plans they're going to get in trouble, as we saw.

"We were almost ahead of the game, and the feeling just looking at it was 'geez, if we just get another 50 runs real quick' which you can't do in this country.

"We've spoken about that, so it's not like it's something new.

"But pressure does strange things and we saw a lot of people go out and try and sweep their way to a score.

"It's not all doom and gloom, but the 90 minutes of batting certainly wasn't anything special."

Australia's preparations for the third Test, already in turmoil with the inability to regain the trophy, have taken further blows in recent days with Pat Cummins racing home between Tests, and the duo of Josh Hazlewood and David Warner being ruled out of the series with injuries.

The third Test, which has been moved from Dharamsala to Indore, will get underway on Wednesday, March 1.
