David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins are all uncertain to play in the three-match ODI tour of India, which starts on March 17.
Warner, who will use the series to fight for his Test spot, returned home from India after the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series (the fourth and final Test starts on Thursday afternoon AEDT) with a fractured elbow after being hit by a short ball.
The veteran opening batsmen is no guarantee to slot back into the Test team for the World Test Championship final against India in England during June, or the Ashes which will directly follow it.
He will need a weight of runs in all formats of the game between now and then after a lean run in red ball cricket, which, combined with his horrid average in England, could sway selectors to either hand Travis Head a prolonged run at the top, or bring in a youngster like Henry Hunt or Tim Ward, who have both made a habit of scoring runs at Sheffield Shield level.
News Corp are reporting that Warner will travel to India for the three-match ODI series and is currently on track to tick all the boxes and pass as fit, but that there is no absolute guarantee that he will.
Maxwell is believed to be the most questionable of the trio.
He fractured his leg at the start of the summer at a birthday party, missing the Big Bash League and any chance of a return to the Test team during the series against India, which he was believed to be a chance for given the spinning conditions.
The star all-rounder has been named for the ODI tour, but it's believed selectors may hesitate to play him in all three games as they look for a slow build ahead of the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India this year during October and November.
The tournament being held in India makes the three-match series important for Australia, who will likely look to rotate through a number of options during the series to hand all players in the squad a chance at learning the conditions.
Marsh is believed to be the most likely to play as he makes his return from an ankle injury, while Pat Cummins also is yet to make a decision on his return to India.
The captain missed the third and will miss the fourth Test of the series as he spends time with his mother who is in palliative care.
It's believed Steve Smith will captain the ODI team if Cummins is out.
The news of the quarter follows confirmation earlier this week that Jhye Richardson has re-aggravated a hamstring injury and will be replaced by Nathan Ellis.
