Madrid led 4-0 after 70 minutes thanks to two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and one goal each from Daniel Carvajal and Luka Modric.
However, the game took a late twist, with Shakhtar Donetsk scoring three goals in the final 12 minutes to set up a thrilling finish and scare the life out of the Madrid fans.
Alex Teixeira scored first for the home side, through a penalty in the 78th minute, before Dentinho's header five minutes later reduced the lead further.
Teixeira then struck again in the 89th minute, to make it 4-3, but Real were just able to hold on and remain top of Group A.
