England has thrashed New Zealand by 210 runs in the first ODI overnight at Edgebaston.

New Zealand, who made the ODI World Cup Final at the MCG just a few months ago, were comprehensively beaten, thanks largely to centuries from Jos Butler and Joe Root.

Finn and Rashid then each took four wickets to round out a commanding victory.

The loss was New Zealand's second heaviest in the nation's history.

The Kiwis got off to the best possible, after sending England into bat, removing Jason Roy for a duck in the first over and then Alex Hales a short time after for a quick fire 20, to have the hosts at 2-50 after 7.2 overs.

However, that brought the in-form Joe Root to the crease.

Root shared a 121 run partnership with captain Eoin Morgan, before Morgan was removed for an explosive 50 from 46 balls, in an innings that included one four and three sixes. Root was then dismissed by Boult for 104 off 78 balls in another impressive innings from the young batsman.

New Zealand managed to snare a few quick wickets to have England at 6-202. However, despite taking six wickets, England's scoring rate was an impressive 6.7 per over.

Man of the match Jos Butler then combined with tailender Adil Rashid for a 177 run partnership that set up the win for England.

Butler smashed the New Zealand bowlers to all parts of the ground, bringing up his century off just 66 balls. He was eventually dismissed in the 48th over for 129 runs off 77 balls, with 13 boundaries and five sixes.

Rashid recorded his highest ever ODI score with a blistering 69 off just 50 balls.

England eventually posted their highest ever total of 9-408 after their allotted 50 overs.

The match saw several other records fall, with the win England's biggest ever in their history and the seventh wicket stand between Butler and Rashid the highest in ODI history. Butler's century was also the second quickest ODI century.

New Zealand made a positive start to the unlikely run chase, before they lost their last seven wickets for just 38 runs, to be dismissed for 198.

Finn took 4-35 for England, and Adil Rashid backed up his performance with the bat, with an impressive 4-55.

The win goes some way to erasing the pain of England's eight-wicket loss to the Black-Caps in the World Cup Group Stage.

New Zealand have just one day to regroup, with the second ODI on Friday at The Oval.
