Melbourne Renegades opening batsman and captain Nic Maddinson has been ruled out of the remainder of the summer after scans confirmed a ruptured ACL.

The 31-year-old, whpo has played six matches for Australia in the shortest format of the game to go with three Tests, suffered the injury while fielding during the Renegades most recent game against the Perth Scorchers.

Scans returned on Monday confirmed a ruptured ACL, which will likely leave Maddinson racing the clock to be fit in time for the start of next summer with a nine to twelve month recovery the normal.

It also means he is now no chance of being amongst the Australian squads for the tours of India or England over the winter, with the slim chance he had of being selected as a bolter disappearing.

โ€œOur thoughts are with Nic and we will continue to support him as he works through his recovery,โ€ Melbourne Renegades General Manager, James Rosengarten said in a club statement.

โ€œNic has been a fantastic leader for our team since taking over the captaincy last season and he will continue to play a big role in this team moving forward.โ€

The Renegades are yet to announce who will take over from Maddinson as captain, but will need to move on quickly.

The club's form started strongly this season with three straight wins, however, they have now lost their last four on the trot, with scores of 114, 115 and 124 in the first of those three games, before the Perth Scorchers chased down 155 on New Year's Day.

The Renegades will play the Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers in their next three games, with the club currently sitting fifth place on the table, but having played more games than any team behind them.
