Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry has called for a push for more women's test cricket, citing amazing opportunities for women cricketers.
Women's cricket is currently the biggest it has ever been in terms of fans, growth and viewership. With the introduction of the Women's Premier League in India in a couple of months, the women's cricket arena has shattered crowd attendance records, and viewership records and seen an incline of younger girls wanting to become professional cricketers.
Currently, at the forefront of most fans' minds, women's cricket has grown exponentially in the last couple of years. However, there is still one format they have struggled to grow- test cricket.
Despite a successful 2021-22 summer for the Australian women's team, they didn't play a single test match during the 2022-23 summer. This is one reason test cricket in the women's game has failed to grow.
Entering a new year, Ellyse Perry is hoping their fixture for the next summer can include red-ball matches building off their success against other nations in the limited-overs format.
"The more opportunities to play Test match cricket for our group the better," Perry said.
"Absolutely, playing here [at Manuka Oval would be great], but anywhere is always a really great thing for the development of the game, in particular the long form."
