Former Australian ODI captain Aaron Finch is set to retire from international cricket, calling time on a career that saw him taste World Cup glory twice.

The 36-year-old's call comes less than five months after stepping down as Australia's white-ball skipper, handing the reins over to Pat Cummins in September of last year.

The crowning glory of the Victorian's career came when leading Australia to a drought-breaking T20 World Cup victory over New Zealand in 2021. The win coming six years after earning a place on the dais at the 2015 World Cup.

Finch's departure from the T20 captaincy comes during a break in Australia's schedule, with the Aussies not set to test themselves in the shortest form until September when facing South Africa on foreign soil.

Cricket Australia will now commence the search for their latest T20 captain, a search that will require completing ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean.

While bowing out on the international stage, Finch is expected to remain available for BBL selection.

Finch has turned out for the Melbourne Renegades since the dawn of the competition in the summer of 2011/12, however, as of this season's completion, the veteran is now off-contract.ย

The top-order batsman made 146 ODI appearances for his nation, as well as featuring in 102 T20Is and five Tests.

Finch retires with a total of 8526 international white-ball runs to his name.
