Football Australia have confirmed that Tom Sermanni will return to the Matildas as an interim coach taking over from Tony Gustavsson, effective immediately.
The longest-serving coach in Matildas history, Sermanni has a long and detailed coaching history that included serving as the nation's head coach from 1994-97 and 2005-12.
He is also the Western Sydney Wanderers Head of Women's Football.
"It's an honour to return to the CommBank Matildas, even in this interim capacity," Sermanni said in a statement.
"I'm looking forward to working with this talented group of players and helping to ensure a smooth transition as Football Australia continues its search for a permanent head coach.
"My immediate priority is to prepare the team for the upcoming International Window."
Semanni's previous resume includes two stints with the Matildas (1994-97 and 2005-12), being the head coach of the United States Women's National team, working as the head coach of New Zealand and serving as a technical consultant for the Canadian's Women's National team.
Away from the international stage, he has also coached several Australian clubs, been an assistant for Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the J-League 1 competition and worked as the head coach of Orlando Pride in the NWSL competition over two years from 2016 to 2018.
"We are delighted to welcome Tom (Sermanni) back to the CommBank Matildas program," Football Australia CEO James Johnson added.
"With over three decades of football experience in Australia and internationally, his extensive knowledge of the global women's football landscape, the local Australian game and his previous success with the team make him the ideal candidate to guide the CommBank Matildas through this transitional period.
"We are conducting a thorough and comprehensive search for our next permanent head coach.
"Tom's appointment allows us the time and space to make the right decision for the long-term future of the CommBank Matildas' program, while ensuring our team remains in capable hands for the upcoming international fixtures."
