It appears as if trouble may be brewing in Formula One in the guise of seat belts after HaasF1 driver Romain Grosjean made a big fuss about the fact that Lewis Hamilton undoes his seatbelts after taking the win on the cool down lap so that he can wave to the fans a lot easier.
Apparently the Frenchman brought the issue to the attention of FIA Technical Delegate Charlie Whiting in Suzuka who said that taking them off was not acceptable, but lessening them after the race had ended was okay.
However, Lewis Hamilton admitted that he didn't loosen them, in factย he did take them off, as Felipe Massa pointed out that it was too hard to just loosen them, it's more a case of they are on or they are off.
Hamilton wanted to know why Grosjean thought it was an issue and the Frenchman said he just wanted clarification, especially after seeing Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll's post-race accident in Sepang, an incident which Whiting said didn't warrant any further action, either for removing the steering wheel or catching a lift with the Sauber of Pascal Wehrlein.
โWell I don't think you should undo your belts. I think we've see what can happen on a slowing-down lap, so I think it's a very bad practice to undo your belts,โ Whiting said.
So maybe we will see a new rule clarifying this matter at the next round in Texas.
