Swiss maestro Roger Federer has beaten fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the Indian Wells Masters in California.

The 35-year-old becomes the oldest champion in the tournament's history following the result, as he's four years older than Jimmy Connors who previously held the record when he won the tournament at 1984 aged 31.

Federer faced Wawrinka in the Australian Open semi-final earlier this season, and the pair were at it again, with Federer breaking his good friend to take the first set 6-4.

It was Wawrinka's first appearance in an Indian Wells final and the Swiss star wasn't going down without a fight, breaking Federer right back and holding a 2-0 lead to start the second set.

The number 10 ranked Federer wasn't fazed however, as he fought back hard to overcome Wawrinka 7-5 in the second to his fifth tournamentย at Indian Wells and take his career tally to 90 titles.
