Russian Ekaterina Markarova has stunned Angelique Kerber at Roland Garros, with an incredible 6-2, 6-2 victory over the world No.1.
Kerber is the first female seed to drop out of the French Open, as she was wiped off the court in under an hour and a half.
Markarova hit 25 winners, as she took advantage of Kerber's lack of confidence, following a difficult clay court season thus far, which has yielded just two wins from six matches.
Markarova will now face Lesia Tsurenko in the second round, who defeated Kateryna Kozlova 6-4, 6-0.
Kerber was on the same side of the draw as Australian Sam Stosur, who is due to play Kristina Kucova in the openign round.
