Superstar outfielder Juan Soto has confirmed his future by signing with the New York Mets after a sensational season with the New York Yankees.
In what is the largest contract in professional sports history, Soto and the Mets agreed to a 15-year contract that will earn him $765 million (USD), per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
It is understood that the contract does include an opt-out after five years, but if Soto decides not to opt-out, his contract will go up by $4 million per year - from $51 to $55 million - meaning he could earn in excess of $800 million if he decides to remain at the Mets until the 2040 season.
This comes less than 24 months after he turned down a 15-year contract worth $440 million to join the Washington Nationals in 2022.
Finishing third in the American League MVP voting this year, several teams showed an interest in his services, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays.
Throughout his seven seasons in the MLB, he has hit .285/.421/.532 with 201 home runs and 592 RBIs and become one of the best hitters since Barry Bonds.
While Soto will make the switch to the Mets, the Yankees attempted to retain his services and keep him partnered with Aaron Judge by tabling a 16-year, $760 million deal, but this was rejected by Soto and his management.
