Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has revealed Australia are considering a bombshell selection call ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka.
While Australia managed to claim victory in the first clash, it's tipped they could elect to go with three spinners for the final clash of the series, also to be played in Galle from Friday.
Cummins revealed Glenn Maxwell would come into the team if they go that way, replacing Mitchell Starc and likely batting at number eight in the line-up.
Intriguingly, Maxwell hasn't played a first class game since before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, making his selection an incredible risk for the Aussies as they look to take a two-nil series clean sweep before returning to Australia, having claimed a ten-wicket victory in the first Test, which lasted just three days.
On a pitch which took turn, quick bowlers were seldom used by either nation, with Sri Lanka only picking one.
Australia could go the same way this time, but will wait until the final moment to make a call.
"I'd love if anyone can read the wicket and tell us what it's going to do because I'm hopeless," Cummins said
"It feels a bit harder than it did last week … but we'll give it right up until tomorrow morning (to finalise the team).
"Last week you probably didn't need two quicks but Mitchell Starc's class, so we'll wait and see."
Maxwell only came into the squad after Travis Head was removed from the picture with injury, joining as a late replacement.
Maxwell will also add more batting depth to the Aussie side in what is expected to be another low-scoring contest.
"It's a pretty different kind of first-class cricket here to what you might experience playing Sheffield Shield," Cummins said.
"Different pace, the wickets are so different.
"The role that we see him in is a little bit of bowling and a bit of batting at No. 8 and taking the game on. It might not be grinding out a hundred but a quickfire 30 or 40."
Teams will be named at the toss, to be conducted at 2pm (AEST) on Friday.
