Australian allrounder Aaron Hardie has been ruled out of the three-match T20 series against New Zealand.

Hardie, who entered the squad in place of Marcus Stonis three days ago, has now been withdrawn from the squad with a minor calf injury.

In what would have been a golden opportunity for Hardie to showcase his talents before the T20 World Cup, Cricket Australia confirmed on Sunday night that he will be replaced by Brisbane Heat seamer Spencer Johnson.

"He's got a tight calf," Voges said viaย ESPN Cricinfo.

"It's more precautionary. He'll bat if required tomorrow. Hopefully, it's nothing too significant."

It is understood that he experienced calf tightness while bowling for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield and was sent for scans on the injury.

Hardie isn't the only Australian player that will be absent for the series, as vice-captain and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade will be miss the opening match to be there for the birth of his first child in Hobart.

However, there is some good news with Matthew Short and Xavier Ellis returning to the team after overcoming a hamstring and rib injury.

"I was spewing to miss that West Indies series," Ellis said in Wellington on Sunday.

"For me now it's time to hit the ground running and put my name forward for the World Cup.

"There's not a lot of cricket outside of IPL [before] the World Cup after this series. Security [of a spot] isn't there. I don't think it's ever there.

"It still feels like a dream to play for Australia so I just want to relish every opportunity I get.

"The goal is to play a World Cup for Australia so I'll be doing my best to keep my hat in the ring."
