Elijah Winnington claimed gold at The World Short Course Championships in Hungary on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Queenslander, who won silver at this year's Olympics, powered to victory in 3 minutes and 35.89 seconds.

This triumph comes in the same Duna Arena in Budapest where Winnington won the equivalent long course title two years ago.

“This pool holds a special place in my heart. I won my first world title in this pool and I'm glad to do it again,” said Winnington in his post-race interview.

Trailing closely behind Kieran Smith for most of the race, Winnington powered through in the final stretch to overtake the American and secure the gold medal.

“I'm probably not in my fittest state right now, so I just knew it'd be a race and I had to stick with him - and I know I'd have the biggest heart coming home.”

Winnington's career continues to climb, with this victory marking another significant milestone. Speaking to reporters after securing silver at the Paris Olympics, Winnington reflected on earning bronze in the 4x200m relay at the Tokyo Olympics.

“I haven't ever told anybody this, but I've never actually looked at that medal because I didn't think I'd earned it, so having a medal around my neck tonight on the dais is going to be really, really special for me."

This is the Dolphins' second title of the Championships after Lani Pallister won gold earlier this week.

Pallister swam a new Australian and Championship record time of 8 minutes and 01.95 seconds in the 800m freestyle, claiming her third medal of the Championships.

Australia currently sits third on the medal tally with 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals, trailing behind Canada's 9 medals and the USA's commanding lead with 18 medals.

The World Short Course Championships continue over the weekend.
