Australian veteran Matthew Wade has called time on his glittering international career, spanning 13 years and 225 games across all formats.

Wade featured in 36 Tests and 189 (97 one-day, 92 T20) limited-over matches for Australia but will continue to play locally for the Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmania.

The 36-year-old has already flagged his next move after his playing career, joining the coaching ranks for the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan.

Wade, who recently completed his Level Three coaching certificate, holds ambitions to one day be a head coach.

"I'm officially retiring," Wade, who called time on his first-class career at the end of last summer, told cricket.com.au.

"It's been an ongoing discussion for pretty much every tour or every World Cup that I've been on in the last three or four years.

"It's been a really fluent conversation that I've had with George (Bailey, chief selector) and Ronnie (coach Andrew McDonald) over the last six months or since the last World Cup finished.

"Even leading into the last World Cup, we've been really open and had really great communication around where I'm at with my career.

"If we went into the last World Cup and I managed to get some runs and we won that, then things would look maybe a little different and maybe I'd keep going โ€ฆ it was just kind of an understanding from all of us."

Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley said: โ€œCongratulations to Matthew on what has been a wonderful international career during which his skill and versatility has made him an outstanding performer across all formats.

โ€œI'm delighted he will add to his massive contribution by coaching the next generation of stars and also continuing to light up the Big Bash with the Hobart Hurricanes.โ€

Wade played his final Test and ODI in 2021.

He made his T20I and ODI debuts during the 2011-12 summer before winning his Baggy Green in Barbados in 2012

Wade finished with four Test tons, two coming during a drawn Ashes campaign, as well as one in ODIs.
