NBA Champions the Boston Celtics have confirmed they will change owners in the coming years.
The Celtics, who took out the championship at the end of the 2024 Finals series, lost the NBA Finals in 2022, lost the conference finals in 2023 and have won their Atlantic Division in each of the last three seasons, have committed to having all balances of the clubs in new ownership by 2028.
In a short statement on the franchise's Instagram account, Boston Partners L.L.C confirmed they intend to sell to a majority interest either this year or early next year.
Team Governor Wyc Goursbeck has also all but been confirmed to continue in his role until the closing of the new deal in 2028.
"Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C, the ownership group of the Boston Celtics, announced today its intention to sell all the shares of the team. The controlling family of the ownership group, after considerable though and internal discussion, has decided to sell the team for estate and family planning considerations," the franchise wrote.
"The managing board of the ownership group expects to sell a majority interest in 2024 or early 2025, with the balance closing in 2028, and expects Wyc Grousbeck to remain as the Govenor of the team until the second closing in 2028."
The current owners purchased their majority share in the club for $360 million in 2002, and could well sell for a figure approaching $5 billion. In recent years, the Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks have all sold for between $3 billion and $4 billion.
The Celtics have the most titles in NBA history with 18 and are also preparing to make Jayson Tatum the highest-ever earning NBA player with a new deal on the horizon.
