The Dallas Cowboys are currently on the hunt for a new head coach to replace Mike McCarthy and it seems like there's one key name on their list: cross-code superstar, Deion Sanders.

First revealed by FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Sanders and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have been in contact surrounding the role.

The two-time Super Bowl champion cornerback and MLB outfielder just completed his second season with the Colorado Buffaloes, where he has posted a 13-12 record.

Sanders was quoted on Monday evening, speaking to ESPN's Adam Schefter about the potential move to "America's Team".

"To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it's intriguing," Sanders told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday night.

"I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it's intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community."

The decision to part ways with McCarthy was a difficult one for Jones and the Cowboys but it was mutual.

McCarthy's contract expired following a 7-10 season, while Dallas's Super Bowl drought now stretches to three decades since their 1995 championship.

"I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure," Jones said on Tuesday (AEDT), according to Channel 9.

Jones' next coach will be his ninth since taking ownership of the Cowboys.
