Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed new test captain Ben Stokes and new coach Brandan McCullam to take the Ashes off Australia in June 2023.

The leadership pairing was entirely different in Australia last summer as Joe Root and Chris Silverwood led England to a poor 4-0 series loss.

But Vaughan believes England's new aggressive style and impressive home form will be enough to beat the Aussies.

"At the start of April, if you had said they had a chance to win back the Ashes next year we would have said there was no way they could do it," Vaughan wrote for The Daily Telegraph.

"But, on the back of a remarkable summer of Test cricket, it is clear: England can regain the urn next summer."

"Australia will respect the aggressive way that England have played this summer. And they will fear it too, knowing that England can attack and are so dangerous from all positions."

Their aggressive brand of cricket has been labelled 'Bazball' and has seen them win six of seven tests, with series wins against New Zealand and South Africa, and Vaughan was quick to heap praise on the new leaders for those results.

"The leadership group of Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum has been so clear in releasing the shackles of any pressure on the field," he wrote.

"They have sent a clear message to the opposition that they are out to win, from any position."

The Australian team is also in good form, but there's a lot of cricket to be played before June, meaning this Ashes series is anybody's to win.
