Superstar all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been officially ruled out of Australia's next World Cup match against England due to a concussion.
Maxwell will be under concussion protocols for up to eight days after falling off a golf cart and will miss the England game - an incident that occurred off the cricket pitch.
It is understood that he fell off a cart transporting players to the team bus after playing golf with his Australian World Cup teammates.
This is his second freak accident in the last 12 months to cause injury, having previously broken his leg after pretending to chance a friend at a birthday party in November and slipping.
"He's doing fine. He'll start some light exercises today and we feel as though it will be a reasonably straightforward return to play protocol," Australia coach Andrew McDonald told reporters in Bengaluru.
"I suppose the fortunate part was there was no other injury sustained which could have been a lot worse than it is.
"It rattled everyone, to be fair, once it came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game.
"There was nothing untoward in the behaviour throughout the day.ย It was a clear-cut accident.
"Unfortunately it has compromised what we are doing as a team."
It is projected that Maxwell will only miss one game and will be back and ready to fire in the following match.
His absence from the team will likely see the return of Victorian Marcus Stonis, who has been fighting a niggling calf ailment for some time. It will also ease the pressure on Marnus Labuschagne, who had been tipped to be dropped in favour of Stoinis before the match.
While Maxwell's batting will definitely be missed, it is his ability with the ball that will provide issues for Pat Cummins, robbing him of a bowling option.
"There's no doubt it leaves us a fraction exposed at the back end in terms of how Glenn has been performing," McDonald said.
"But Marcus Stoinis does become available, all things going well at training today."
