Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell has signed a deal with English club the Birmingham Bears for the upcoming T20 Blast.

The 34-year-old has recovered from a broken leg suffered in November of 2022, edging closer to a return in the Shield as he returns to fitness.

Prior to his stint in the UK, Maxwell will play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming Indian Premier League competition in April and May, his 11th season in the competition.

Birmingham finished on top of the North Group table last year, but had their season cut short by Hampshire in the quarter-finals.

Maxwell, who has scored 8,451 runs across his 355 T20 innings, said that he is looking forward to joining the team.

"I can't wait to get stuck into a new challenge with the Bears. Edgbaston is a great place to play cricket with extremely passionate fans and I'm looking forward to joining an exciting list of players," Maxwell said.

Bears First Team Coach Mark Robinson said Maxwell joining the squad was an amazing signing for the club.

โ€œIt is an amazing signing โ€“ he is one of the fastest scorers in world cricket โ€“ and I am sure he will be a favourite with Bears fans," Robinson said.

โ€œI am also delighted for our fans. We have now got a really exciting Blast squad that I am sure will provide great entertainment and help us achieve our goal of again getting to Blast Finals Day here at Edgbaston."

Maxwell joins Hassan Ali as the squad's second overseas selection, while notable names Moeen Ali, Ed Barnard Chris Rushworth have already signed on.

The T20 Blast is set to kick off on Saturday, May 20.
