Australian tennis players Bernard Tomic and Cruz Hewitt bowed out in straight sets during the opening round of the Australian Open qualifiers.

Both players' swift exits on Tuesday from Melbourne Park dashed hopes of their qualification for the tournament's main draw.

16-year-old Cruz Hewitt, the son of former world No.1 Lleyton, went down 6-1 6-4 to Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Unable to convert his qualifying wildcard into a place in the main draw of a major for the first time, Hewitt quickly left the court with a towel draped over his head, escorted by security after his defeat.

Speaking at the Newcome Medal awards last month, the teenager appeared unphased by comparisons to his father.

“It is what it is, but I don't really mind,” Cruz said.

“It just drives me to be better.”

Bernard Tomic also took to the Melbourne courts on Tuesday, returning for the first time in three years.

During his 11 appearances at the Australian Open, the 32-year-old has reached the fourth round on three occasions.

Tomic struggled to counter the firepower of Slovakian world No.128 Jozef Kovalik, falling 6-3 6-1.

After his loss, Tomic asked a tennis official whether he would be fined for skipping the post-match interview.

“Okay, I'm good,” he replied upon being told no, before departing the courts - possibly for the last time.

The next stage of the Open begins on Sunday 12 January with the start of the men's and women's singles.
