Konstas returns to Australia to join New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield, following his exclusion from the national team's batting lineup.

Despite a standout performance in his debut Boxing Day Test and a key role in Australia's victory over India in the New Year, the Sri Lanka tour saw Konstas take a step back from the field.

Travis Head replaced the teenager at the top of the batting order in last week's series opener in Galle. His swift half-century all but secured his place to continue in Konstas' spot for the second match, starting Thursday.

โ€œI totally understood the decision [not to play in the first Test], Travis Head's a legend of the game and he's been dominating in these conditions up top,โ€ Konstas told The Age.

โ€œFor me it was trying to get exposure to Dubai [and] Sri Lanka, try to learn and I feel like I learned quite a bit about things if I do play in the subcontinent.โ€

Travis Head confirmed that Konstas is expected to return as an opener when Australia travels to England for the World Test Championship Final against South Africa in June.

โ€œMost likely I'll go back in the middle order and Sam will open,โ€ Head told reporters in Galle.

Cricket Australia confirmed that Konstas returned home to play against Queensland on Saturday at the Gabba.

Konstas made his Sheffield Shield debut in 2023, contributing scores of 10 and 23 in a hard-fought, low-scoring victory over Tasmania.
