Nick Kyrgios has overcome a slow start, to defeat German serve and volleyer, Mischa Zverev in the second round of the China Open in Beijing.

Kyrgios dropped the opening set with one commentator saying, "it doesn't look like he's in the mood to be focused today," as a classic lackluster Kyrgios performances looked on the cards.

However, the 22-year-old dug deep, dropping just four games in the final two sets, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a showdown withย Steve Darcis for a spot in the semi-finals.

โ€œI just wanted to prove to myself how much I have improved,โ€ Kyrgios said post-match.

โ€œI knew it was going to be tough. He plays a very old-school type of tennis, likes to come forward a lot.โ€

Meanwhile, countryman Bernard Tomic suffered another disastrous loss, going down 6-3, 6-1 to Argentine Diego Schwartzman in under an hour. The loss comes a day after Tomic recorded his first ATP Tour win in three months in the opening round of the Japan Open in Tokyo.
