Following a remarkable comeback at the Brisbane International in the past week, Nick Kyrgios has re-aggravated the wrist injury that saw him have an almost two-year hiatus from the game.

Kyrgios made his return to the Tennis singles arena in Brisbane, where he went down to rising French star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The towering youngster served his way to a close win, defeating the controversial Aussie star, 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3).

“For me, honestly, it was a great match, considering I hadn't played in 18 months,” Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist, said as per Fox Sports.

“To put myself in a winning position was exciting. It's all really experimental - I don't really have any protocol of how it's going to be or how it's going to pull up. Me and my physio, we are taking it as it comes. If we can get through a match, we get through a match."

Kyrgios' best result at his home open was a Quarter-Final finish in 2015. Having had success in other tournaments since, most notably an appearance in the Wimbledon final in 2022, Kyrgios expressed his eagerness about making a return to the biggest stage in Australian tennis.

“I think I was really excited for the Aus Open, but after today, if I'm able to play, I'm able to play,” he said. “I think I almost need a miracle, and I need, like, the stars to align for my wrist to hold up i n a Grand Slam for sure.

The Australian Open commences on January 12 at Melbourne Park with 10 Australian men confirmed starters in the main draw.
