All-rounder Glenn Maxwell has opened up on missing out on Australia's Test tour of India next month.

The power hitter was in contention to return to the Test side before he suffered a broken left fibula in a freak accident at a friend's 50th birthday party, ruining any remaining prospects.

Instead, the Australian Cricket Board selected four spinners as part of the 18-man squad - uncapped Todd Murphy, Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, and Queensland leg-spinner Mitch Swepson.

Whilst rehabbing his injury, Maxwell spoke on his missed opportunity as part of Fox Cricket's commentary team for this season's Big Bash League.

"Probably will nag at me for the rest of my life," he said.

"It's nice getting the opportunity to watch your teammates play, especially over there. I think they've got the squad that's probably as good as I've seen go over to India since I've been watching Tests over there, anyway.

"With the way Cameron Green showed his wares in Sri Lanka last year, they were some brilliant signs of guys adapting their gameplan to the conditions, and being able to implement it straight away."

The four-Test series in India starts on February 9 in Nagpur.
