Conor McGregor has just thrown petrol on speculation he'll take a superfight with Floyd Mayweather, with the UFC megastar granted a boxing licence in the US.

According to reports from leading MMA writers Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting and Brett Okamoto of ESPN, McGregor has been licenced as a boxer in California.

California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster told Helwani: “He's qualified [as a boxer].

“I'd love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We're happy to license him. We're happy he's a California fighter.”

FOX Sports US's Damon Martin reported that McGregor would not stop with California: “After receiving his licence to box in California, McGregor will also be applying for a boxing licence in other prominent states as well. States such as New York, Nevada and Texas are likely at the top of the list as regular destinations for the biggest boxing events in the United States.”
