World No. 3 Rory McIlroy has survived a three-man sudden death playoff to secure the US PGA Tour Championship and with it the season-long FedEx Cup and a $US11.53 million ($A15.15 million) payday.

McIlroy outlasted Americans Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell for the Tour Championship title, taking the US$US10million ($A13 million) bonus out of the hands of world No.2 Dustin Johnson in the process.

The playoff lasted four holes before McIlroy made birdie on the par-4 16th hole to win it all.

Earlier McIlroy and Moore both fired impressive six-under-64s on Sunday to get to 12 under for the championship.ย Chappell managed a 66 to join them.
