A Bronze medallist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Harry Garside looked to become the first Australian boxer to win a Gold medal in the Olympics event in Paris.
However, his hope for Gold has already ended in his first bout, with the Victorian falling to Richard Kovacs in the Round of 16 - having earned a bye for the first round.
The shock exit saw Garside break down after the fight, with the boxer revealing to the media that he felt "like a failure" after going out in his first fight.
"I feel like a failure," Garside said via AAP.
"It's a wild sport, after three years for it to be over just like ... I feel very numb, I didn't envision this happening.
"I love Australia and I really envisioned winning that gold medal for Australia."
The fifth seed in the 63.5kg division, Garside won the first round 3-2, showing his perfect skill and footwork and looked destined to advance to the next stage.
This was not to be, as the second round was all his opponent. Kovacs, a five-time national champion in Hungary, won the round 5-0 before pulling off a 5-0 win in the third round.
"Before the last Olympics I hated myself, but then the relationship I got with myself is extremely good ... but I started being too nice to myself," Garside added.
