Cycling's greatest monument returns for 2024, with the peloton to battle the fearsome cobblestones between Paris and Roubaix.

The race will be held on Sunday, April 7, with it getting underway at 7:10pm (AEST).

Mathieu van der Poel of team Alpecin Deceuninck enters as the heavy favourite to defend the crown he took last year, but it won't come without stress.

Flat tyres and crashes are a regularity in Paris-Roubaix, and no one has won the race back-to-back since the great Tom Boonen in 2008 and 2009.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates), Stefan Kung (Groupama-FDJ) and Christophe Laporte (Visma-Lease a Bike) are the most likely challengers, although, it's not always that straight forward on the roads to Roubaix, with the most famous recent example being Australian Mathew Hayman's incredible win in 2016, outsprinting Boonen on the Roubaix velodrome.

As always, the Roubaix velodrome is where the race will finish after 260 kilometres of riding, which includes 55.7 kilometres on cobblestones over 29 sections.

That makes this year's edition of the event the most cobblestone heavy in almost 30 years. A chicane that has been added prior to the Forest of Arenberg (for safety) will make things tricky, while the other five-star sections are the Mons-en-Pavele at 211.1 kilometres, and the Carrefour de L'Abre at 242.5 kilometres. Another six sections of the race are four stars.
