REPORTS: Red Bull secure engines for 2016

Red Bull have reportedly secured their future in Formula 1 by finding a new engine supplier for the 2016 season: themselves.

Independent F1 news site The Judge 13 is reporting that the base engine will still be supplied by Renault, while Red Bull will develop it independently along with their own hybrid energy harvesting systems in a new Red Bull engine division headed by experienced engine guru Mario Illien.

The base engine will be the long-awaited upgraded Renault unit, which Red Bull is expected to use from next weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix onwards, but is likely to be rebranded as an ‘Infiniti' in deference to the luxury performance marque that is part of the Renault/Nissan automotive portfolio.

A deal — and the team's use of the upgraded power unit — had been delayed as Red Bull and Renault tried to work through, of all things, an intellectual property dispute.
