Sydney Sixers' rival Big Bash clubs are hoping for a Steve Smith return, and urging Cricket Australia to do everything possible to lure the cricketing legend back for another season.
The ex-test captain is currently without an big bash team for after Australia finishes hosting South Africa on January 8.
And with the competition fast approaching, the Sixers are in a race against time to get Smith's signature.
The Sixers have reportedly filled their 18-man squad for the upcoming season - but will lose both Chris Jordan and James Vince to the UAE T20 League in January - possibly leaving an avenue for Steve Smith to return around then.
The only issue stopping that move would be the fixed $2500 match fee for replacement players, as it is likely not enough for Smith.
The other creative option would be for the Sixers to ask for help from the league to subsidise Smith's contract, which is what the Sydney Thunder have done with David Warner.
To lure Warner back to the Big Bash, Cricket Australia designated part of his salary as a marketing spend in an attempt to attract more fans to matches.
"If that's what we've got to do, I mean I can't speak on behalf of the league but we all want the best talent playing in this competition," Sixers wicketkeeper Josh Philippe told AAP.
"Smith absolutely loves playing for the Sixers so there's no reason why we won't try to get him again."
Adelaide Strikers captain Peter Siddle has even come out to support the league in pursuing Steve Smith.
"The fan following (Smith) has is massive" Siddle told AAP.
"He's the greatest Australian batsman of recent times. He's someone you want back.
"Yes, it's a tough summer, I've done it, playing Test cricket and trying to come back to the league is hard.
"But if there's any opportunity to get those guys back in their Big Bash colours, whichever team they play for, it's a must."
The 2022/23 T20 Big Bash League season kicks off on Tuesday December 13 with the Sydney Thunder hosting the Melbourne Stars.
