Former Australian Test great Rodney Hogg has labelled Steve Smith's captaincy as 'boring' after the drawn second Test.

Smith declared shortly before Tea on day five, leaving New Zealand an unlikely 321 for victory from a maximum of 48 overs.

โ€œSteven Smith won't come up with a high winning percentage as captain if he's going to come up with these boring declarations,โ€ Hogg said on SEN radio.

โ€œVery, very disappointed in his declaration and their attempt to make runs on day five โ€“ cricket's not about stats anymore, the public wants results and entertainment.

โ€œThat last day was set up after going through batsmen being on top and it was set up for some sort of result โ€“ you've got to give a bit to get a bit back.

โ€œI was so disappointed with their attitude on that last day.โ€

Hogg also said that Smith has a responsibility to entertain cricket fans, which he did not do.

โ€œWe heard they were going to be aggressive in England and they weren't,โ€ Hogg said.

โ€œDon't worry about your win/loss ratio any more. Think about, you've got a responsibility for entertainment.

โ€œWe saw against the Indians on that last day last year, Smithy's declaration was too defensive.

โ€œSmithy, we love you, you're an absolute superstar, but give us a little bit more entertainment on the final day.

โ€œIt was pathetic"

Australia will take a 1-0 lead into the third and final Test against New Zealand in Adelaide next Friday.
