Mitchell Starc will not play in the New Year's test after suffering a finger injury, per reports from News Corp's Ben Horne.

Starc suffered the injury on Boxing Day after taking two wickets earlier in the day, sent for scans after the conclusion of play that reportedly revealed tendon damage.

It has been reported that Starc may still bowl in the Boxing Day test, but only if required, while he will be sidelined for the third test against South Africa in Sydney as the Aussies look towards next month's tour of India.

Starc's injury may open the door for Josh Hazlewood to return in the Harbour city, previously missing the Gabba test after suffering a side strain.

South Africa managed just 189 runs on the opening day of the test before being bowled out, with the Aussies starting day two with David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease.

Labuschagne lost his wicket early in the day, run out after a mix up with Warner in the middle of the pitch.
