South Africa have locked up the final automatic qualification spot for the 2023 World Cup after rain knocked Ireland out of contention.

Ireland, who are currently hosting the final Super League series before the qualification deadline against Bangladesh, needed to record a 3-0 win over the Tigers to qualify automatically for the World Cup.

Instead, rain washed out the first ODI in Chelmsford, robbing Ireland at the chance to claim points for the third time in the Super League and consigning them to a best case scenario finish of ninth spot.

They currently sit 25 points behind South Africa, however, with ten points for a win and only two matches remaining, it's now a mathematical impossibility for the make-up of the top eight teams to change.

It means the Proteas join New Zealand, England, hosts India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia and Afghanistan with their tickets to the October and November-held tournament stamped.

Ireland, with two wins over Bangladesh in the remaining two games, can still finish ninth, but that will make little difference, with teams ninth through 13th in the Super League all qualifying for the qualifier tournament, to be held in June and July in Zimbabwe.

The teams joining Ireland out of the Super League are the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Zimbabwe. Those five sides will be joined by the top three teams from League 2 - being Nepal, Oman and Scotland - while two teams from a qualifier in the United Arab Emirates and United States of America will also feature.

Only two of the ten teams will qualify for the World Cup itself, with hosts Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and the West Indies the seeming favourites to make the grade.

Fixtures for that tournament - with games likely to take place in Harare and Bulawayo - will be revealed by the ICC in the coming weeks, while World Cup fixtures should also be revealed in the near future.
