In 1954 the NBA introduced the 24-second shot clock in response to the Fort Wayne Pistons defeating the Minneapolis Lakers 18-19 four years prior, in what is the lowest-scoring NBA game of all time.
The Pistons knew that the Lakers were the stronger team so elected to simply hold onto the ball for the majority of the game and not allow the Lakers to score. But since the introduction of the shot clock, the pace of play has improved and scores with it.
