A two-time Olympic swimmer for Paraguay, Luana Alonso has announced her retirement from the sport.

Confirming her retirement on social media, she is one of the most-followed active athletes in the sport and holds multiple Paraguayan records, including the 25-metre butterfly, 50-metre butterfly, 50-metre backstroke and 200-metre individual medley.

Born in 2004, the 20-year-old apologised for her performance in the race before announcing her retirement.

Competing in Paris in the 100-metre butterfly, Alonso went out in the heats and finished in 29th place - one place less than when she competed at the 2020 Toyko Olympics.
