The Australians have had a mixed start to the US Masters. It was a day were wind played a major role on the Augusta course.
American Charley Hoffman had an incredible day in the tough conditions, scoring a 7-under 65. His card featured a remarkable nine birdies, and he currentlyย sits four shots in front of second placed William McGirt.
Marc Leishman leads the charge for the Aussies, he currently sits at one over par, eight shots behind leader Charley Hoffman. The day started well for the Victorian, birdying the par five second hole. A bogey on the 10th and final hole, however, put him over par for the day.
Jason Day and Rod Pampling both carded a two over 74 on the day. Day double bogeyed the 11th hole, yet saved what could have been a worse day, with a birdie on both the 15th and 16th. Pampling also had an up and down day, managing two birdies, but also four bogeys.
Former winnerย Adam Scott was a further shot behind the pace, finishing at three over. It was a crazy finish to the day for the Aussie, scoring three bogeys and a birdie over the last four holes. Youngster Curtis Luck had a tough day at the office, carding a six over 78. The 20-year old is expected to do big things over the coming years, however will be hoping he can improve in the immediate future, to be up with the leaders.
World number one Dustin Johnson withdrew from the tournament at the first tee. It came after he fell and injured his back falling down theย stairs earlier in the week. Things appeared fine with Johnson, hitting on the driving range prior to the start of play. However the pain began to be too much, forcing him to withdraw.
"I'm playing the best golf of my life and to have a freak accident happen yesterday afternoon, it sucks really bad," explained Johnson.
