Australia have gotten off to the worst possible start in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Indore.

Umpire Nitin Menon would turn down two shouts in the first three balls of the Test against Indian captain Rohit Sharma, but both would ultimately prove to be out.

Only that Australia didn't review either.

The first ball of the match, bowled by the returning Mitchell Starc, would shape across Rohit Sharma who, caught on the crease, attempted to defend away from the body.

A clear noise came as the ball went past the bat, but umpire Menon decided it was not bat on ball.

Australia clearly weren't convinced either, electing not to review, only for the snicko to prove the noise was bat on ball.

Just two balls later, Mitchell Starc appeared to have Sharma out again, this time LBW.

He played at a straight ball that bounced, hitting him on the top of the pad. There was some hint of an inside edge as the ball also went through to Carey, but umpire Menon again was unmoved.

Another decision to not review would come back to bite stand-in captain Steve Smith and the Aussies, with ball tracking proving the ball was hitting the top of the stumps.

It ultimately wasn't costly for the Aussies, with Sharma falling in the sixth over for just 12 to the bowling of Matt Kuhnemann with an excellent stumping completed by Carey.

Australia would take another wicket just two overs later with Kuhnemann again striking to get rid of Sharma's opening partner Shubman Gill for 21, after he returned to the side for KL Rahul.

India were 2 for 34 in the eighth over.
