Mosman young gun Ryan Hicks had a Saturday to forget taking on Manly-Warringah in a first grade clash at Manly Oval, losing his middle stump first ball as he attempted to stop a rot of wickets to quick Ryan Hadley.

Hickes arrived at the crease with the score reading 5 for 106, having just seen Joe Colgan and Matthew Moran dismissed LBW without troubling the scorers.

Add to that the wicket of opening batsman Stirling McAvoy and club captain Lachlan Hearne, and Mosman had sunk from 1 for 95 to 5 for 106 in a matter of overs.

That would quickly become 6 for 106 though as Hicks departed first ball, leaving a straight, full ball which crashed into his middle stump.

Hadley went on to finish with 8 for 48 as Mosman were knocked over for 140 on a difficult Manly Oval wicket, before Manly reached 7 for 108 at stumps. They will require 33 for first-innings points next Saturday with just three wickets in hand.

Elijah Eales was the pick of the Mosman bowlers on Day 1, taking 3 for 23 from 15 overs.

Hicks was selected as part of the New South Wales under-17s squad at the end of last summer to compete in the under-19 national tournament, with the young wicketkeeper taking four catches in five matches during the tournament, and scoring 45 not out against Tasmania in the final game after struggling at the top of the order.

Firmly on future selection radars, Hicks has struggled for form this premier cricket season since making the move from Hawkesbury.
