Major League Soccer owners are planning to attract Wayne Rooney to the USA when he decides to leave Manchester United.

Rooney has come under fire for his performances over the past 12 months, and if he continues on that path he may be pushed out of a starting spot sooner rather than later.

The 30-year-old's current deal see him worth aroundย ยฃ300,000 a week, and while he's currently contracted until 2019, Chinese clubs are after his signature.

Despite the Asian interest, Merrit Paulson, owner of MLS champions Portland Timbers, has confirmed American clubs are planning on beating out China for Rooney's services, and says the United superstar still has the quality in him to play at that level.

โ€œI would argue he still has some good soccer ahead of him," Paulson said.

โ€œI think he would be a great signing for MLS - 100 per cent MSL would be attractive for him.

โ€œKeeping in mind that is a very talented footballer, who has quality soccer ahead of him, you are not talking about a 34 or 35 year old.

โ€œI get excited about the impact he would have in the MLS more than a guy who is coming in later in his career."
