With the French Open in the rearview mirror, our attention turns to Wimbledon.

Known as the oldest tennis tournament in the world and arguably the most prestigious, Wimbledon is held at the All England Law Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

Dating back to 1877, the tournament features a unique surface, with players competing on grass courts, the traditional tennis surface.

Wimbledon, like the other Grand Slam events, was initially contested between top-ranked amateur players before the Open Era changed proceedings in 1968.

The hosts have been generally starved of success, with the men's tournament seeing no victories between Fred Perry's in 1936 and Andy Murray's in 2013, while no women has won since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Swiss champion and tennis legend Roger Federer holds the record for most singles titles across both the Open (1968-current) and Amateur (1977-1967) eras with eight while American woman Martina Navratilova holds the all-time singles record with nine, a feat Federer just couldn't catch.
