A rainy start to the tournament has led to an incredible 80 first and second round matches being played on day three of Wimbledon as officials, and players, try to make up lost time.

Seeds fell early, with world number six Sofia Kenin falling in straight sets to fellow American Madison Brengle in just 45 minutes. Fellow top ten seed Belinda Bencic lost her first round match against world number 102 Kaja Juvan 6-3 6-3, while number 5 seedย Bianca Andreescu won just three games in her straight sets loss to Alize Cornet.

After Wednesday's play, just half of the top ten seeds in the Women's draw remain, with young gun Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka recording strong victories throughout the day.ย 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza also won her second round match against Lesley Kerkhove, dropping just six games in the tournament so far.

Andy Murray was once again one of the main attractions on centre court, beating German Oscar Otte in a five set thriller. Murray, who is playing with a metal hip, found himself two sets to one down before fighting back and winning the match in three hours and 51 minutes as he continues his fairytale Wimbledon comeback.

Nick Kyrgios finally got to resume his first round match up against young Frenchman Ugo Humbert, a replay of the five set, second round thriller at this year's Australian Open. Play restarted at 3-3 in the fifth and Kyrgios broke first, taking an 8-7 lead.

Despite taking a nasty fall on the grass court, the Australian was able to resume and saved two break points in the final game, sealing the match after three hours and 26 minutes on court.

It was a successful day for other Australian's in the tournament, with Ajla Tomljanovic and James Duckworth both winning their first round matches, while world number 78 Jordan Thompson defeated 12th seed Casper Ruud in five grueling sets, marking his first Wimbledon win.

Young Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov also progressed, while Diego Schwartzman continued his impressive 2021 form, dropping just one set in two matches as he defeated local hope Liam Broady to make his way into the third round.
